Cultural Literacy

Here are blog entries and resources to various cultural literacy lessons and lessons literacy. I've been collecting student work all year long and hope to add examples as my year comes to a close.

These lessons are in chronological order as I use them with my Spanish 4 classes (Regents level) of mixed sophomores and juniors.

The Special Paper Lessons: These are lessons done in the beginning of the year and this blog entry includes links to all the videos I used on youtube. Please click here if you'd like to view the powerpoint that I use in class.

The Sneetches: Dr Seuss' The Sneetches was the basis for this lesson and it leads into talks about immigration. Click here for the powerpoint with the story with prompts.

The Single Story Lesson: Nigerian writer Chimamanda Adiche gave a TED talk in which she speaks of the danger of the single story. I use this speech along with other resources in my class to start discussions on stereotypes and how we treat each other. This blog entry contains a description of my entire lesson with links to youtube videos I use in the lesson. Please click here if you'd like to view the powerpoint that I use in class as we move throughout this two day lesson.

Literacy & Language: I reflect on what I have learned by reading chapter books with intermediate learners.

Cultural Power Lesson: It's the single story Part 2. The Single Story two day lesson is in the fall and the Cultural Power two day lesson is in the spring. Click here for the powerpoint with prompts.
